Grants & Fellowships
The Center supports faculty and student research on innovative topics related to the southern United States with travel grants, summer research stipends, postdoctoral fellowships, and course development awards. Applicants from all academic disciplines are encouraged to apply.
Faculty
Faculty Course Enhancement Grants - The Center for the Study of the American South invites applications for course enhancement grants for courses that are being offered Fall 2012 or Spring 2013. These grants of up to $1,000 are intended to enhance students’ encounters with the history, contemporary experience, diverse cultures, and global context of the American South in transformative ways. Proposals may address that goal through such items as guest presentations, field expeditions, community-engagement activities, performances, student publications, or other innovative course elements.
Visiting Scholars - Individuals who hold appointments at other academic or research institutions and are visiting to work with a particular faculty member or principal investigator on a research project but do not receive a paid appointment at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Graduate Support
McColl Early-Stage Research Fellowship in Southern Studies – The McColl Early-Stage Research Fellowship provides one semester’s funding for a UNC Ph.D. Candidate to conduct early-stage dissertation research on a topic related to the southern United States.
McColl Dissertation Year Fellowship in Southern Studies - The McColl Dissertation Year Fellowship provides one academic year’s funding for a UNC graduate student to complete a doctoral dissertation on a topic related to the southern United States.
Summer Research Grants - The Summer Research grants provides financial support for summer research by select UNC graduate students.
Graduate Student Travel Grants - The Center offers UNC-CH graduate students grant support for travel expenses to scholarly conferences.
Postgraduate Support
Due to budget constraints, the Center is currently unable to accept applications for postdoctoral fellowships.
Postdoctoral Fellowships in Southern Studies - The Postdoctoral Fellowship in Southern Studies on the history, culture, or society of the American South, broadly construed to include the states of the former Confederacy and adjoining areas. Undergraduate Support
Frances Ferris Hall Fund for Undergraduate Research - The Frances Ferris Hall Fund supports research by UNC-CH undergraduates on women in the American South. Up to two awards of $500 will be made in the spring for use the following year.
Sounds of the South Award for Undergraduate Research - The Sounds of the South Award supports UNC-CH undergraduates wishing to record and work with musicians within any genre of southern music during the summer. One award in the amount of $1000 will be made each spring for use during the summer of the award year.
